Gorgeous digs and my new favorite color....

I love it when I come across mid-century modern decor done well! Designer Kristin Gallipolli's home is filled with an array of her mid-century finds. She's done a great job pairing pieces and enlivening them with colorful fabrics and prints. I'm currently loving the magenta shade she's using..It's a bit offbeat and unexpected. Although sometimes a bore,  the all-white back drop really works in this sun-filled home!! Kristin also owns a home store, Mason, in New Caanan, CT.

The Miracle Chase Giveaway!

(Photo by artist Katherine Du Tiel)
I like to think that even though I create beautiful interiors for my family and clients, my inspiration is deep rooted and not just led by a color palette, a fabric sample or which way the sun comes into a room. Just like a beautiful woman with no soul, a beautiful room with out personal warmth can be very cold and uninviting. Where we draw this personal warmth and inspiration is so important. I am blessed to find it in many different places.

(google images)
So each month or so I hope to bring you an inspiring person, project or experience that has touched me and helped me become a more beautiful mother, wife, friend and designer. Because these moments of personal inspiration are a great part of what helps create a larger more beautiful world around me (and hopefully you, too).

Meet Joan, Meb, and Katie, the authors of the book The Miracle Chase. I have known Joan personally for several years. When I first met her, at one of my husband's business work dinners, she mentioned she was writing a book about miracles. I was very intrigued and we spoke briefly about it. We dropped the subject when the conversation at our larger table turned more "business - like". What Joan failed to tell me then, and several years after, was that she and her friends had all been the recipients of several personal miracles.
(Authors in 1999)
Those miracles led them on a 10 year personal exploration to uncover "What Really is a Miracle?" Because just like you and I; Joan, Meb and Katie really had trouble believing that their Modern Day Miracles weren't just really weird coincidences. In fact, in some cases it would have been better to believe they were coincidences rather than Miracles, because then they had to question the roots of their Faith.
(Photo by Artist Katherine Du Tiel)
Miracles can be really messy stuff. When you need a miracle you're probably not in a very happy place, you are in turmoil and in great need. And after you have received a Miracle, revisiting the traumatic event and trying to make sense of everything can be very painful and difficult. Most of us prefer to forge ahead into the light rather than look back on dark events. To recognize the Miracle you have to recognize the pain and that's why I think we hear so little about a Miracles these days.

I do not want to give away too much of the book, but it highlights each of these women's journeys, their personal Miracles, their incredible friendship and the history behind Miracles in every religion. What is so touching and personally endearing to me is that these women could be your friends, the women sitting next to you at PTO, or your neighbors.

The book has become a wonderful gift to me. After I read it I started sharing the stories of these three women with my close friends. And that is when I received a wonderful, unexpected gift. My friends revealed to me their own personal Miracle stories. I have had many moments of wonderful, deep, meaningful conversations with women I have known for years, yet never knew their secret stories. What a wonderful surprise to develop deeper friendships with them through these conversations. Who thought a little book would provide such a tremendous gift to me?!

Joan, Meb, Katie and I wanted to give the readers of Willow Decor this Gift as well. If you are the recipient of The Miracle Chase Giveaway, we will send you five The Miracle Chase Books and a $25 Starbucks Gift Card. This will allow you to share the book with your five closest friends, enjoy some time together and hopefully spark some wonderful conversations and bring you closer as friends.

The authors are always trying to help others, so please know that a large portion of the book sales profits go right back into the Miracleworks Foundation. A charitable organization set up by the authors to give back to women and children in need. You can check it all out on their new website by clicking on the photo above or HERE.

Vicente and Me

Confession time: I've been sitting on these photos for a couple of days now, because I wanted to come up with a clever introduction for them. I wrote and re-wrote, but all I ever came up with was...I MET VICENTE WOLF, I MET VICENTE WOLF!!!!!!!
Now you understand my dilemma. I mean what do you say about meeting someone you admire so much., who's creative genius inspires you to be better at your own profession, everyday?
(That's me palling around with Vicente. I won't show the photo of me unconsciously twirling my hair around my finger while he spoke to me)
So, sorry this is late; but here's what happened. Monday, the Houston Design Center hosted a book signing and lecture to promote Vicente's new book, Lifting the Curtain on Design.
This was something I couldn't miss!
It was so exciting and I was pretty nervous. I imagined myself walking up to his table and drooling or passing out. Also, I wondered if I could tell him how much I love his work and how much of a genius he is. In reality, all I could get out was, "Hi Vicente I'm Carolina. I love your books, will you sign my copy of Learning to See, also? Oh, and may I take a photo with you?" Amazing, huh? Funny enough, he asked me if I spoke Spanish and I answered, "Si, claro". This seemed to make him relax a bit and we chatted a little bit more.
Next, Vicente spoke about his new book and about the ins-and-outs of running such a prominent design firm. I found this refreshingly honest. (Let's face it designers have a tendency to be a bit standoffish!) So, it was awesome.
Although by evening's end, Vicente wasn't overwhelmed by my charm to the point of insisting on being my new BFF; I still had an experience I will never forget:)

Reader Room Makeover: Restrained Wanderlust

One of my former colleagues, Lorna, wrote to me a few weeks ago, because she had recently moved in a townhouse and was looking for a fun way to decorate her bedroom (pictured below). You can see the most special feature of this room is the angled ceiling, which is a feature she definitely wants to highlight. The furniture is staying for now, but she mentioned that she plans to paint the room green.

My first thought was that the best way to showcase the angled ceiling would be a gallery wall like the one below. While this can be an expensive look to pull off, it can be done with frames from Ikea, and a little creativity when it comes to "artwork". One of my favorite tricks is to use pages from old art books. Admit it, you're never going to go back and read them again anyway.

Another option I liked was splurging on really cool wallpaper for the wall right behind the bed. While I loathe the one wall/different color look, I think a bold graphic wallpaper is a much better approach. You can also afford to go a little more expensive than you normally would because you don't have to paper the whole room. While perusing Walnut Wallpaper's site, I fell in love with a muted leopard print...annnnd this is where I got a little carried away. Even though Lorna isn't switching up the furniture in her room yet, I decided to take advantage of the blank slate to play around with how I might decorate it.

One of my favorite ways to approach an empty room is to pick a really fabulous person (real or fictional) and decorate the room for them. In this case, I thought of Grace Kelly's character in Mogambo, which also starred Ava Gardner and Clark Gable. Grace's character is a married woman on safari with her kind-of-boring husband. Inevitably, both she and Ava fall in love with Clark Gable's character (the rugged safari guide).

I kind of imagined this room as Grace Kelly's bachelorette pad after she dumps both guys and sets off to travel the world on her own -- filled with exotic but familiar pieces collected from all over the world.

Starting with the leopard print on the high wall, I would paint the rest of the room a "mint julep" green, carpet the floor in seagrass or jute, and layer another rug on top. (I love the preppiness of the pink/green combo, which I think is fitting for a girl from the Philadelphia Mainline)

Because the wallpaper is kind of strong, I would keep the furniture low, sleek and modern. I like using task lamp sconces on either side of a bed to free up space on the nightable (maybe for vintage travel brochures and tickets). I would use ethnic textiles in either a muted color or hot pink to keep that "princess-y" feel. Finally, I love artwork that "speaks to each other" despite being totally different in origin and style. I think this vintage chimp print next to Lauren Nassef's Banana illustration would be so cute and playful.

Sources, left to right: 1. Leopard wallpaper in aged ivory (Walnut Wallpaper) 2. Top-drawer side table (West Elm) 3. Jute leather rug (West Elm) 4. Woven leather rug (Urban Outfitters) 5. Turkish copper pilaf serving pieces (Loaded Trunk) 6. Mexican "piranha" bedspread -- I'm so obsessed with this one! (Loaded Trunk) 7. Sorrento bed (Williams Sonoma Home) 8. Wyatt sconce (Pottery Barn) 9. Ikat pillow (John Robshaw) 10. Printing cloth bolster (John Robshaw) 11. "Bananas for Sale" original drawing (Lauren Nassef) 12. Circa 1794 Primates etching print (Empiric Studio)

So do you guys have any more advice for Lorna? If you have a angled ceiling, how did you decide to play it up?

Here's To An Organic New Year!

Daily Inspiration: 12.29.09

(via Coco + Kelley)

While cleaning up my computer for 2010, it's come to my attention that I've got more images stashed in my inspiration file than I could ever, ever blog about. Since they certainly aren't doing any good taking up space in my hard drive I thought I'd post a inspiration pic every day in the new year. No deep thoughts here, just pretty. (Although, could anything I write on here classify as a deep thought? Yeah, not so much.)

A Word Of Thanks

If you're wondering, yes; this is a re-post. I've never done this before, but I just wanted thank all of you for your comments. It reminds me of one my favorite things about blogging, kinship. So many of you mentioned cutting out pictures and ideas and then cataloging them in some manner. I didn't mention this in my original article (See Below), but that is something I do too. Now I say I do it for "my work", but lets face it. I also do it for fun, just like I have been doing since I was 10 or 11 years old. Sometimes I think I should outgrow that habit but haven't yet. I just love hearing from all of you who love saving all those pretty pictures for as long as possible. So again, thanks everyone:)

XO

Carolina

As I continue my efforts to renew inspiration, I decided to clear out mental and physical clutter. Last week, I attacked my closet and this weekend I attacked my magazine stash (gasp!)
I clear out old issues once or twice a year, but its usually only a handful. This time, I decided to be ruthless!! It wasn't easy, but I made a big dent. Now, I would like to say I got rid of half of my magazines, but that would be exaggerating. I can say I cleared out about 1/3 of the stash. I'm quite proud of myself! Now don't worry, I did drag all the mags to recycling. Lucky for me I had a very strong assistant:)
(Note: No back issues of Domino were harmed during this process)

Friday Favorite

Hello all! Sorry for the lack of posts this week. Still struggling to be inspired.
I did want to share these beautiful photos I found today. So much beauty in such simplicity. I can't tell you where they came from, but I can tell you that I found them on a blog I am really loving right now. Its called Either the Drapes Go Or I Do. I couldn't resist that name and I'm so glad I found it. Perhaps for now I will enjoy other people's inspiration.
Have A Great Weekend!!

White Out: A Light Filled House in France

A few weeks ago, I wrote about my current love of blue. I also asked what colors some of you were inspired by and got several great responses. Ms. Joni of Cote de Texas mentioned loving white, and I got to thinking about how much I love white too. Years ago, I wouldn't be caught dead with almost anything white; but now I can't get enough!
I find as my life gets more hectic and with more demands placed on me, I love the quietness and simplicity of white. When used in decor, white offers room to breathe. It lightens up any space.
Here is a wonderful example! White stones, stucco, and whitewashed woods blend beautifully with soft paint and floor colors. Its like a little piece of heaven:)

I'm not certain if this floor is slate or stained concrete, but I love its warm depth and patina. Pairing it with white walls and furniture shows that white can be warm, exciting, and beautiful.

I've Had A Bit Of A Revelation

Warning: Some May Consider This Post To Have Too Much Personal Information. Scoffers Look Away!
I sat down to do some blog surfing and ran across this video. It is a Swedish dance group's tribute to Michael Jackson. (Found here) Its just fantastic! Here's the funny part. As soon as the dancing began, I broke down into tears and could barely see the monitor through my fogged up glasses! So, what I think is that I have been in mourning. I don't think its a coincidence that since Michael Jackson's passing, I haven't had two creative thoughts to rub together!
I feel very silly admitting this. I mean I sound more like a 13 year old than a 33 year old. But its the truth. When someone as inspiring and magical as Michael passes away, its like the world becomes a little grayer. Some of you are probably wondering why a Texas girl who loves interior design would take this so hard. I mean I don't sing, dance, or anything along those lines. But it was his Passion! His insane talent and his determination to live in his own way. No matter what others thought. That is what inspired me as a little girl. To be completely unique without apologies.
Okay, if anyone is still reading, thanks for indulging me and my crazy feelings. I'm not sure what to do about all this, maybe I just need some time before color returns to my imagination.

Take A Deep Breath...Just Relax.

Close your eyes and breath deeply.
Veeery deeply.
I'm considering having myself put into a deep meditative state to overcome my creative funk.
Just let go of all cares and maybe my brain will do a hard reset. Aahhhh.
Don't know if it will work, but its worth a try, no?
I found two amazing bedrooms that would be just right for this process. I think they are perfect for weekend unwinding.

Hope all of you get to relax this weekend, too:)
