(Inspired by) Acquaintance Cards

After listening to friend's Match.com horror stories, I'm definitely feeling wistful for the very tame (and sometimes mischievous) sentiment behind acquaintance cards, which ladies and gentleman looking for love used in the 1870s and 1880s. Consider it the 19th century version of a "poke" -- except it was probably less creepy - I mean, who else uses the Facebook Poke function besides creeps?

Either way, these are super cute, and ripe for a comeback -- but, perhaps in a different context.

Love: Sailor's Knots

Let's face it...right about now, all of our cubicle daydreams wind up at the beach. We start wearing navy and white stripes more than sailors do, and strangely regret not buying those borderline tacky bottles of sand from our last vacation.

Seeing as there is still an hour left of Cinco de Mayo, I wanted to highlight Papel Picado -- a Mexican paper-cutting folk art that I just adore. Seen to great effect in this lovely Mexican meets French wedding. And of course, the invites would be made by Rifle Paper Co's brilliant Anna Bond. Love.

Love: Vintage Postage

Sad confession. I think I spend an average of 12 hours a day on the computer. I usually get 7 hours of sleep. That leaves me five glorious hours to unplug (and by unplug I mean spend at least an hour or two cooking and cleaning.) I really have no idea how people with kids do it.

All of the time I spend being a slave to the blinking light of my Blackberry really makes me long for the days when catching up with a friend who lived far away meant a thoughtful letter every few months instead of learning their super-deep thoughts via Facebook feed. Thus, my clearly evident love of stationery and letter writing. Fact: One time a colleague asked me if I ever get tired of writing about paper products. Can't say I do.

My latest obsession isn't even something you stuff in the envelope. It's the envelope itself. I've discovered a few brilliant Etsy sellers who include vintage stamps with your notecard purchases, and I think it makes the experience even more special for the recipient.

For a cheaper alternative, you can skip the stationery altogether, and just but the pre-stamped envelopes or the stamps themselves as seen in the next few photos.
